Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have made it to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) recommendation for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.

This highly honored sporting award is given to the most exceptional achievements in the field of sports over a period of four years in the international circuit by the Sports Ministry of India.

Vinesh who has won laurels for the country is a member of the family which produced wrestling champions like Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari both of whom were the Commonwealth Games medalists. She became the first Indian female wrestler to win gold at the Asian Games and also won two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games. She was honored with Arjuna award in the year 2016.

Both Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia continued their fine form in 2019 and won medals in the recent Asian Championships in China, bronze and gold respectively.

Bajrang who is the current world No1 also has been rewriting history by winning gold at Asian Games at Jakarta and Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast) in the 65kg category. He also was the Arjuna award winner of the year 2015.
