Goncalo Guedes goal wins Nations League title for Portugal with an underwhelming final 1-0 against the Netherlands in Porto on Sunday.

This time they did it without the help of the global superstar Cristiano Ronaldo who was overshadowed by the young guns. Ronaldo was joyous but relatively restrained over the victory celebrations as he added one more to his trophy collection. Still, he was the man to lift this latest one and sealed it with a kiss.

Fernando Santos’ side triumphed at the 2016 European Championship and Goncalo Guedes’ second-half strike gave them the title which according to Santos was the result of their unity as a team.

“For the last five years, we have been an almost indestructible family who knows what we are capable of doing. We knew we could win this match,” he said.

Goncalo Guedes, the Valencia winger smashed in from the edge of the area following Bernardo Silva’s clever cutback and scored for the hosts. The Dutch even though tried to get back into the game, Memphis Depay’s powerful header was well saved by Wolves Number one Rui Patricio and Marten de Roon lashed over.

The Player of the Tournament went to Bernardo Silva who is the architect of the game’s only goal and Ronaldo had to settle for the tournament top goalscorer.
