Spain’s Garbine Muguruza celebrated the winning of Monterrey Open title on Sunday as Victoria Azarenka decided she was unable to continue because of an injury to her right leg.

Muguruza was leading the match when Azarenka retired injured from her first WTA singles final in three years.

“It’s unfortunate that I couldn’t give my best today; but I tried my hardest”, a tearful Azarenka was seen saying at the presentation after the match.

“I want to say thank you to my son Leo today, who is not there with me now. I would love him to be here to share with me this because it is special.”

The crowd was seen responding to her words and started chanting,” Vika! Vika! Vika!”

Even though she received treatment on her leg during the medical-timeout between the sets, her movement was significantly hampered during the second set.

Muguruza’s victory was never looked in doubt and broke the pained Belarusian 3 times in the first set and again in the fourth game of the second.

“It’s a great feeling to come back and defend a title. It is never easy,” Muguruza said after the victory.
