For the second successive year, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been named CAF African Player of the year.

History repeats as Salah held off competition from teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to land the award. He edged the same two players 12 months ago in a vote decided by the technical directors and head coaches of 56 CAF member associations.

The Egyptian received the accolade at Dakar, Senegal on Tuesday evening where he was also included in the Africa Best XI for 2018 along with Mane and Naby Keita

“I am proud to win this award twice. I must thank my family and my teammates for this and I dedicate this award to my country Egypt”, Salah said when he collected the trophy.

“This is big for me, I love it because I saw it when I was young and I always had a dream to win it one day”.

He defended his crown after scoring 44 goals for Liverpool and Egypt in 2018. He has guided Liverpool to the top of the standings this season with 13 Premier League goals.

His exceptional performances throughout the year lead him to retain the BBC African Footballer of the Year prize and finish sixth in the Ballon d’Or standings.
