The owners of the Premier League champions, Manchester City are linked to purchasing a club in India as part of an effort to uplift their Asian presence.

According to chief executive  Ferran Soriano, City is keen to add to their portfolio, which already includes seven teams following a buy-in for a piece of Chinese third-tier side Sichuan Jiuniu FC in February.

City Football Group (CFG) owns seven clubs including Major League Soccer’s New York City FC, Spanish side Girona, Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos and A-League side Melbourne City.

Soriano was quoted as saying by BBC as,” We have some interests in some markets and countries where there is a genuine love for football and opportunities like China, but also India. There might be other opportunities in Asia. We have been looking at India for nearly two years now. I would say we might end up doing investment in India this year.”

CFG was formed as an umbrella organization in 2013 when City’s sister club was initiated in New York and according to Soriano, there is still room for significant investments.

“As we see it now, there is a natural pace of growth that we will follow that takes us to more than seven teams, but not 100.”
