Gymnast Simone Biles and World No: 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic won the top prizes at the 2019 Laureus World Sports Award on Monday night, February 18th.

The Serbian who had a magnificent 2018 which saw his comeback from a terrible elbow injury just to bag two Grand Slams- the Wimbledon and the US Open and soar to the top of ATP rankings.

“I did think about leaving Tennis. It took me several months to find the meaning and purpose again. This award reflects and symbolizes this journey. Reflecting on the journey it seems like a fairytale”, Djokovic said.

American Biles, 21 was named Sportswoman of the year after bagging four golds, one silver and one bronze at the 2018 World Championship.

With a combined 20 medals at the World’s, Simone Biles who had also clinched 4 Olympic gold, tied Russia’s Svetlana Khorkina for the most by a female gymnast in world championships.

Golfer Tiger Woods won the comeback award, while Tennis champion Naomi Osaka won the Breakthrough of the Year award.

Football World Cup winners France won Team of the Year and the Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge took the Exceptional Achievement award after his marathon victory in Berlin.
