Discus thrower and former CWG gold medallist, Krishna Poonia has won the Sadulpur assembly seat in Rajasthan defeating BSP’s sitting MLA Manoj Nyangali.

Contesting on a Congress ticket, Poonia won by a healthy margin of nearly 18 thousand votes after receiving 70,020 votes in total. This was the second attempt by the sportsperson to get into the legislature, having suffered defeat in the previous election attempt.

“For the last 5 years, I have been working non-stop for 12 hours per day, meeting people and attending to their problems. This journey has been tougher than preparing for the Olympics”, Poonia responded to the media interview.

Congress amassed 101 seats in the house of 199 while BJP bagged 73. Sadulpur constituency is home to the number of promising athletes and Poonia is determined to harness these talents by developing Sporting and residential facilities for the athletes in the place.

The Commonwealth Games victory and the incredible sixth place in the London Olympics in 2012 lead Krishna Poonia to public gatherings and she struck an instant rapport with the masses and was invited to contest for the elections in 2013. Even though she faced a crushing defeat, it took another five years for her to prepare well for another shot at glory.
