PU Chitra clinches India’s third gold of the championship after Gomathi Marimuthu and Tejinder Pal Singh Toor won the yellow metal for India on the second day.

She defended her 1500m title to give India gold while Ajay Kumar Saroj and Dutee Chand won a silver and bronze in the men’s 1500m and women’s 200m respectively on the fourth and the final day of Asian Athletic Championship on Wednesday.

Chitra had also won a bronze in the Jakarta Asian Games and also won gold in 2017 edition at Bhuveneshwar.

“Got a little nervous towards the end being next to Bahraini runner (Gashaw Tigest) as she beat me to third place in the Asian Games. I had to really push hard towards the end”, she said after the victory.

She won the race in 4 minutes 14.56 seconds while Gashaw clocked 4:14.81 for silver and Bahraini Mutile Winfred Yavi took the bronze in 4:16.18.

In the women’s 200m, Dutee who had finished a disappointing fifth in the 100m final on Tuesday after smashing national record twice, clocked 23.24 seconds to win the bronze.
