As the Asian Athletics Championship 2019 is currently underway in Doha, India has had a fantastic day so far with unheralded Gomathi Marimuthu bagging gold in the women’s 800m final and Tajinder Singh Toor winning the shot put gold being the highlights.

The 30-year old Gomathi marked her personal best of 2 minutes 02.70 seconds in the women’s 800m race while national record holder and pre-competition favorite Toor had with his first throw of 20.22m sealed the yellow metal in the men’s shot put final at the Khalifa stadium.

The 24-year old Toor had his personal best of 20.75m to his account and entered as the season leader among the Asians and he rose up to the expectations.

With 5 more medals on Monday, India’s medal tally stood at 2 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze.

Shivpal Singh added silver in men’s javelin throw with 86.23m which was his personal best. Also, Jabir Madari Palliyalil and Saritaben Gayakwad bagged bronze in men’s and women’s hurdles respectively.

Sprinter Dutee Chand also shared the limelight of the day as she broke her own national record in the 100m dash for the second time in two days.
